How We Got Over

Exploring the creolization of African ritual in North America. Often practiced openly and in plain view, our rituals are earthy, colourful and full of emotion. The essential qualifier lies in the relief, release and comfort that our folkways afford. They lift us to hope.

A digital reimagination of the terror of lost paradise in the common cultural memory and experience of Africans snatched from their world through the fortified doors of European military installations along the West African coast and into an Atlantic world of enslavement and pain.

Documenting African American interactions with fire. Fire is an emotional, elemental and universal force that runs the gamut of expression and purpose. Fire enlightens and consumes, purifies and destroys, always leaving its mark on whatever it touches.

Batwa Gaze

A digital imagination of a Batwa child peering through a forest wall, curiously looking at a “developing” world beyond its borders, without judgement, without fear. An imagination of the spirit self, the beautiful self, the inner-witness that is always present.
